UNRIC campaign shares HRE teaching materials

Received by e-mail: From: Céline Croon, Date: 11/11/2009

Dear colleagues, To celebrate 2009 being the Year of Learning Human Rights, UNRIC has built a campaign aimed at teachers, educators, and students of human rights. Our website www.humanrightseducation.info is the centrepiece of our campaign. It provides easy access to human rights teaching materials for teachers and students (both pedagogical and teaching materials/resources to use in class) and a library of teaching and learning experiences.

We have gathered UN pedagogical and teaching materials from across the UN system and noted links to relevant NGO materials. The materials have also been categorised so it is easier to navigate to materials relevant to you. We have split the website into primary, secondary and tertiary levels with a further division between pedagogical materials and teaching resources.

For the teaching and learning experiences, we have formulated a short questionnaire and are currently gathering responses from teachers and students on their teaching and learning human rights experiences (see links to questionnaires below). We hope this component will provide a more ‘human’ element to the website so we can learn from others’ experiences. The website aims to be a reference for the UN materials on human rights education, and we hope to get major input and materials from NGOs as well. We consider this website to be important because respect of human rights starts with the knowledge of their existence and content, and there is not knowledge without education.

However, the materials we have gathered so far are not sufficient. We need your help to complete our database. We would be grateful if you could send us files or links to your materials relevant to human rights education. We would be glad to promote other institutions’ materials on the website. You can contact us at this email address.

We have questionnaires for teachers and students to share their practices and experiences.

We thank you in advance for your help and we look forward to hearing from you. Yours sincerely, Céline Croon, Assistant to the Director, UN Regional Information Centre, Residence Palace Block C2, Rue de la Loi, 155, 1040 Brussels, Belgium, Tel: +32(0)27888471, E-mail.
