Human rights learning as a way of life

Received by e-mail, From: Shulamith Koenig, Date: 13/11/2012.

Dear Colleagues, Having been, with all modesty, the person who had originally, in 1993 at the Vienna Conference, called and pushed for a UN Decade for Human Rights Education, I went a long way in the last 20 years to realize that we must close the outreach gap by adding a missing link which we call Human Rights Learning. We are calling on every single group, organization and NGO to integrate in their work an ONGOING PROCESS of learning human right as a way of life… — there is much experience to be shared.

I welcome the call from my old friends at HREA to have both an article, recently published in UN Chronicle and a presentation made at UN Women, distributed to members and readers of the Global HRE List, not as an argument, but as a call to engage human rights educators and have you make a necessary commitment to become MENTORS at the community level. This is somewhat a different process, it is NOT teaching, but a process of an ongoing dialogue towards evoking critical thinking and systemic analysis.

We need to ask ourselves, if indeed, when all people in the world will know and OWN human rights as a way of life, plan and act accordingly, will people then pave the road for the journey that will weave a new future for humanity? A future guided by the holistic vision and practical mission of human rights as a way of life — a value system – a worldview for which we have no others option !

Only those who can see this as an imperative for the future of the world could give it the necessary energy …-making this legacy their own. We can each do it our way. Innovation and creativity will finally lay the foundation for a human rights movement.

To start the conversation see the recent article published in the UN Chronicle and a presentation at UN Women:
